2023 NFC East Division Analysis
Oh boy, have things turned around in the NFC East! Just a couple of years back, this division was a laughingstock in the world of football. But look at us now! We’ve got the Eagles soaring high with a 14-3 record, the Cowboys strutting with a 12-5 season, the Giants showing some grit at 9-7-1, and even the Commanders trying to find their way at 8-8-1. The tides have certainly shifted.
In 2022, the NFC East put on quite a show, boasting an impressive record of 43-23-2, which outshined any other division by five wins. Take that, AFC North with your meager 38 wins!
Washington
Now, let’s talk about those Washington Commanders. Admittedly, they’re the underdogs in this division. However, let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. They managed to hit the .500 mark in 2022, so don’t count them out for the playoffs in 2023. Led by 2nd year QB Sam Howell and HC Eric Bieniemy, they might surprise us all.
Commanders QB Sitch
Sam Howell better bring his A-game from day one though, because the second half of the season won’t be a walk in the park. And hey, if he falters, they’ve got Jacoby Brissett waiting in the wings. But here’s the question: Can an offensive line with just one returning starter take this team to new heights? And is Antonio Gibson the real deal at RB? On the bright side, the Commanders do have some promising playmakers like Dotson, McLaurin, Robinson, and Samuel. They could’ve ended up with worse, you know?
Commanders D
Defensively, the Commanders are no pushovers. They’ve got one of the top units in the league. A healthier Chase Young is bound to make some noise in 2023, now that he’s back in game-ready-shape. And let’s not forget Payne, Allen, and Sweat wreaking havoc on that field. They’ll be impressive, and we already saw the Commanders ranking 7th in points allowed, 3rd in yards allowed, 8th in DEF. Red Zone TD rate, and even clinching the top spot in DEF. 3rd down conversion rate.
Commanders Tough Schedule
But let’s face the harsh reality here. The Commanders’ final eight games are against some tough playoff contenders, leaving very little margin for error. With the 8th toughest schedule in the NFL, the playoffs might not be in the cards for them.
Eagles
Now, brace yourselves for the mighty Philadelphia Eagles! These birds are undoubtedly the cream of the crop in the NFC East. Trust me, I’m not kidding around. They’re riding high after a Super Bowl appearance.
Eagles Skill
The Eagles’ roster is an absolute force to be reckoned with. They’ve got a killer offensive line, outstanding skill position players, and let’s not forget their QB with MVP-level talent. It’s crystal clear that the Eagles have put together a formidable team.
And hold on tight because their defense is going to be a sight to behold. Remember those 70 sacks they racked up in 2022? Yeah, they mean business. The Phili D held strong, securing 2nd in yards allowed and 8th in points allowed. With their defensive backs, back, like Slay with a fresh 2-year extension, they’re ready to shine even brighter this year.
Eagles Offense
On the offensive side, Jalen Hurts is leading the charge with a talented arsenal of weapons. Brown, Smith, Goedert—they’re all top-notch. The Eagles’ offense is chock-full of playmakers who will make their mark on the field. Okay, granted, the run-game will look a bit different in 2023. Miles Sanders is out, and in comes D’Andre Swift from the Lions. Gainwell and Penny will back him up, and Scott is still in the conversation. Get ready for some ground-and-pound action!
I can almost guarantee you that the Eagles will finish with 11 or 12 wins this season. They’re just that good.
But hey, don’t be shocked if they end up with 9 or 10 wins either. The NFC East is a beast, my friends.
Cowboys
Now, let’s turn our attention to the Dallas Cowboys. In 2022, they wrapped up the season with an impressive 12-5 record, and I’m sure they’re feeling mighty proud in Jerry World. They’ve got their sights set on a third consecutive playoff appearance. They even had the audacity to defeat the Bucs in the wild-card round, marking their first road playoff win since their Super Bowl glory days in 1992.
And hey, they ended their losing streak against the legendary Tom Brady. Talk about a feather in their cap!
But alas, their journey came to an abrupt end in the divisional round when they faced off against the 49ers for the second year in a row. Those 49ers proved to be their kryptonite.
Cowboys Offense
Now, let’s talk changes on the offensive side. Say goodbye to Anthony Brown and Noah Brown, and welcome Brandin Cooks and Stephen Gilmore. The possibility of Ezekiel Elliott returning to the Cowboys is still up in the air, but according to an insider, a reunion is highly unlikely. Tony Pollard is nursing some injuries, and now they’ve got Ronald Jones from the Chiefs in the RB room. They also have Deuce Vaughn, a 6th round pick in 2023, and Malik Davis, who showed some potential as a rookie in ’22. The run game is definitely a big question mark.
Cowboys Question Marks
Did the Cowboys do enough to bolster their roster for a bigger leap in 2023? Only time will tell. But one thing I’m eagerly anticipating is the Rodgers vs. McCarthy matchup in Week 2. It’s bound to be a fun showdown.
Giants
Last but not least, we have the New York Giants. Now, let me take a bold stance here: if the Giants want to make the playoffs, they absolutely must defeat the Cowboys. Dak Prescott has had their number since his rookie season, snatching ten consecutive victories. It’s about time that streak came to an end, don’t you think? The Giants need some wins against Dallas, pronto!
But it’s not just the Cowboys haunting their dreams. The Giants have a bone to pick with the Eagles as well. Christmas Day is circled on their calendar for redemption. The Eagles handed them a whopping 31-point defeat in the playoffs, and let’s not even talk about their three head-to-head losses last season. Revenge is on their minds.
Giants Weapons
Under the guidance of Brian Daboll, the Giants are heading in the right direction, building something special. And oh boy, do they have an array of weapons for Daniel Jones to work with. Waller, rookie Hyatt, Crowder, and Parris Campbell—all in the mix. But let’s be real, the Giants’ fate is heavily tied to the health and performance of the great Saquon Barkley. He needs to stay on that field!
I must say, the Giants’ defense is pretty darn impressive. Don Martindale is weaving his magic, and they’ve got some fantastic pieces to build around. Banks, Pinnock, Adoree’ Jackson, and Thibodeaux—all solid contributors. But hey, can we please stop the run? Dead last in 2022, folks. Let’s tighten things up.
Giants Schedule
Here’s the kicker: the Giants have the 3rd toughest schedule in the NFL, with 7 road games in their first 11 matchups of the 2023 season. Talk about a grueling start! If they can navigate that gauntlet successfully, they’ll be just fine. But if not, well, expect them to snag a fairly high draft pick.
So, there you have it, folks! The NFC East is back in the game, ready to entertain us with its ups and downs, surprises and disappointments. Buckle up, grab some popcorn, and get ready for some good ol’ football madness! The NFC East will once again assert its dominance and reign supreme as the best division in football. Don’t underestimate the power of these teams.
